Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, The Discovery now offers two different lab formats for school field trips. Discovery Labs and Guided Exhibit Explorations are included with field trips for all Washoe County School District schools and are optional for other schools and groups. Both lab formats still allow ample time to explore the entire museum during the visit.
See below for additional details about each lab format:
A Discovery Lab provides a hands-on, standards aligned activity during your field trip. During the Discovery Lab, students adjourn to one of the museum’s lab spaces to take part in an approximately 45-minute activity led by a member of the museum’s education team. A Discovery Lab typically occurs halfway through a field trip visit. A Museum Educator will provide informed each class of the designated Discovery Lab time upon arrival.
A Guided Exhibit Exploration is a hands-on, standards aligned activity that takes place in one of museum’s exhibitions during your visit. Led by a member of the museum’s education team, the Guided Exhibit Exploration helps students connect the principles exemplified by the exhibit to the area of focus. Guided Exhibit Explorations typically take about 30 minutes. Before and after the Guided Exhibit Exploration, students can explore the entire museum accompanied by their teacher and chaperones.
