Keeping the museum in tip-top shape for our members and visitors is one of our highest priorities here at The Discovery. Maintaining our 67,000 square-foot facility while also being open daily and welcoming more than 200,000 visitor each year can be a challenge. And that’s not to mention the expense!
Thanks to a generous $1 million gift from the estate of the late Gregory Nelson, The Discovery is about to begin a number of capital projects intended to make our facility even more welcoming for members and visitors, and provide long-term durability for crucial systems.
HVAC Retrofit
We will be replacing the museum’s 28 rooftop HVAC units, many of which have been in operation since the building was home to the City of Reno.
Non-slip Flooring
We will be replacing the non-slip flooring surrounding the Truckee Connects and Cloud Climber exhibits located on the lower level of the museum.
Truckee Connects
Upgrades to the pump, filters, and other mechanical systems, along with improvements to the floor drains around our signature water exhibit will be completed.
Carpet & Paint
The Science Underground gallery on the museum’s lower level will receive a fresh coat of paint and new carpeting.
New Equipment
The Discovery is purchasing various equipment used during exhibition installation and de-installation and for facility maintenance, eliminating the cost of renting each time the equipment is needed.
All work is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 26 and conclude by Friday, October 4, 2024. While work is underway, the museum’s lower level including Science Underground, Under the Stars, Truckee Connects and the Cloud Climber will be unavailable to museum visitors. During these improvements, daily admission will be discounted by 50%.

From Monday, August 26 through Friday, October 4, museum admission will be reduced by 50% due to the limited access to a portion of the museum’s galleries.
Under age 1 – Free
Child (ages 1-5) – $5.50
Youth (ages 6-17) – $7.00
Adult – $8.00
Senior (ages 65+) – $7.50
