From an early age, Karen Purcell has believed deeply in the power of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to open doors and ignite imaginations. Today, as founder, owner, and president of PK Electrical, Inc., she leads a thriving multi-state electrical engineering and design firm while dedicating her energy to inspiring the next generation to explore technical fields.
After beginning her career at a small consulting firm in Las Vegas, Karen launched PK Electrical in 1996. PK Electrical offers full-service design for power, lighting, communications, and energy systems across commercial, educational, transportation, and municipal projects.
In addition to leading PK Electrical, Karen continues to advance the engineering profession through service and advocacy. A passionate advocate for women in STEM, Karen authored Unlocking Your Brilliance: Smart Strategies for Women to Thrive in STEM. She also established annual STEM scholarships through the Nevada Women’s Fund to support women pursuing degrees in technical fields.
Karen’s leadership and community impact have been recognized through several honors, including Entrepreneur of the Year (Reno Gazette-Journal), Most Influential Leader to Know (Northern Nevada Business Weekly), and Philanthropy Hero (Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada). These honors reflect her dual commitment to engineering excellence and to building pathways for future innovators.
Karen joined The Discovery’s Board of Directors to support hands-on, curiosity-driven STEM education. Her passion lies in helping girls envision themselves in engineering and scientific roles. She believes early exposure and mentorship can transform the way young people—especially young women—see their potential in STEM careers.
Outside of work, Karen enjoys running and spending time at Lake Tahoe with family and friends—activities that help her recharge and stay connected to the people and places she loves.
