Before you toss that big block of packing foam from your new TV. furniture or appliance, hold on! The Discovery has a better idea for it.
The museum is gearing up for the Styrobot Challenge, a building contest that asks the community to turn one humble material into the robot of their dreams. The Discovery is asking neighbors, families, and businesses to donate their clean, unwanted Styrofoam so that builders of all ages have plenty to work with.
How you can help
Every great Styrobot starts with a pile of odd-shaped foam pieces, and the more variety builders have, the more creative the robots can get. Creativity is one of the judging criteria, along with personality, originality, function, and stability. Your leftover Styrofoam might just become a robot’s head, arm, or sturdy foot. It’s also a nice way to give foam a second life. Instead of heading to the landfill, those pieces will become something wonderful.
So, bring your clean, dry Styrofoam packaging from appliances, and electronics to The Discovery. Donations can be delivered to the museum’s lobby via the main entrance during museum hours.
