Who is The Discovery’s outreach program for?

Our outreach program is design for schools, homeschool groups, community organizations, camp programs, and more.
What programs does The Discovery’s outreach program offer?

The Discovery currently offers lab activities for classroom groups, science assemblies for grade bands or larger groups, and planetarium shows using our mobile planetarium.
What kind of activities/lessons do you offer?

We have a variety of hands-on activities focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Currently we have classroom labs focused on the impacts of the sun, cosmology, phase changes, fossils, anatomy, and biospheres. We are actively working on expanding our offerings. Our planetarium shows range from topics on astrogeology, cosmology, NASA missions, chemistry, and more. Our assembly demonstration focuses on air pressure and phase changes. We understand that the needs of your event may be different than others. We will work with you to make sure the activities reflect your needs.
Who coordinates the educational activities at an outreach event?

The Discovery will provide all the needed staff members to facilitate all aspects of the outreach.
Do I need to provide any supplies for an outreach event?

No, The Discovery will provide all supplies for any lessons, science demonstrations, or activities. Any need for electricity will have to be provided by the site.
How far will The Discovery’s outreach program travel?

The Discovery’s outreach program currently serves northern Nevada (Reno to West Wendover) and northeastern California (South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Susanville, Alturas, etc.).
What are the costs associated with outreach events?

Each type of outreach program is priced differently. Pricing is listed on the various pages of our website. Travel costs for each event is based on roundtrip mileage. We provide a complete estimate during the reservation processes.

Washoe County Schools that qualify as Title 1 (50% or more Free or Reduced Lunches (FRL)) are 100% covered under our Discovery for All program. There is a sliding scale for schools that are 0-49% FRL. If your school is outside of Washoe County, we will work with you and see what costs can be covered.
Can The Discovery bring exhibits out to my event?

Although we cannot take any large-scale exhibits on the road, we do have portable exhibits that are available via our outreach program. A minimum of 90 days advanced reservation is required for outreach events that include exhibits.
Where can the portable planetarium be placed?

For safety reasons, our portable planetarium can only be hosted indoors. The planetarium requires floor space approximately 25′ x 25′ with 12′ of ceiling clearance. It also requires access to power nearby.
