At this installment in the Science Distilled series, audience members will be taken on a deep-dive into the surprising space where creativity and science commingle. Come learn why science needs creative minds and how creativity can be inspired by science. This event in the series is presented in conjunction with Artown and will feature a short documentary film, speaker presentations, and audience Q&A.

Featured panelists:

Tiffany Pereira is an ecologist and scientific illustrator specializing in the flora and fauna of the desert southwest. She has more than 11 years of experience specializing in natural resource management, wildlife management, threatened and endangered species management and springs and seeps management. She has extensive field surveying and monitoring experience as well as technical writing experience for local, state, and federal reporting. She has implemented and/or helped developed protocols and monitoring plans for multiple federal agencies. Her research areas of expertise include flora and fauna interactions, seed and germination ecology, rare plant ecology, soil seed banks, and restoration ecology. As both a researcher and artist, she is also interested in graphic design and illustration for science communication. She provides these services, along with outreach and educational services to DRI and local agencies. She has completed illustration commissions for the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas, research publications, and private entities.

Erick Bandala performs research in water quality, water treatment and site restoration. His major experience is in developing countries on the generation and adaptation of technology for the generation of safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Development and implementation of cutting-edge analytical approach to chemical and microbiological water quality is also within his areas of expertise. Specific research interest includes solar driven Advanced Oxidation Processes, assessing the effect of Climate Change on water quality, developing adaptive technologies for sustainable water quality management, water chemistry, stormwater quality and treatment.

Manny Becerra is a creative technologist and a compassionate leader who specializes in the intersection of product, design, engineering, and community. He has served as Executive Global Vice President for Tesla’s Latino Employee Resource Group, and recently, Manny served as the product lead for the Tesla Design System, focusing on inclusion, empowerment, clarity, and ethical practices. In 2023, Open AI Chat GPT approved a plugin designed by Manny, an accomplishment and honor few designers can claim.
