It takes a special breed of scientist to dedicate his or her life to the most complicated, global, long-term challenges of our time. Wildfire, watershed health, and climate are topics that intimidate some but illuminate our speakers.
This event’s speakers use rigorous methods to produce real solutions. They will share their unique approaches to the actionable science that drives sustainable land stewardship, and they’ll suggest the ways that their knowledge can guide our communities, our businesses, and even our families toward resilient practices.
Kevin Badik, PhD, from The Nature Conservancy will give us a window into TNC’s pioneering methods for landscape conservation done in collaboration with federal land managers and private stakeholders. TNC’s work is fueled by hard evidence about the state of our landscapes in order to guide conservation efforts toward watershed health and wildfire resilience for years to come.
Scott Thomas, PhD, from the Desert Research Institute (DRI) has dedicated his career to using adaptive management to foster more resilient ecosystems. Through his work, he has constructively posed challenges to land managers to improve natural resource management, focusing particularly on military installations and other government land management agencies. He will glean lessons from resilience theory that we can all consider to be part of the solution and become more resilient ourselves.

Science Distilled, a new lecture series created by DRI and The Discovery, makes cutting-edge science approachable through presentations on current and curious topics held at hip locations in a social atmosphere.
Kevin Badik, PhD
Kevin is the Rangeland Ecologist for the Nevada Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. After earning his doctorate from the University of Nevada, Reno, he has been working to understand how fire, climate, and restoration actions impact natural communities in Nevada, Utah, and California.
Scott Thomas, PhD
Scott serves as Supervising Environmental Scientist with Stetson Engineers and Assistant Research Professor with the Desert Research Institute in Reno. He specializes in water resource studies and natural resource management. His research includes adopting lessons from ecology to improve the sustainability and resilience posture of federally managed lands, local government, and business.
