Whisper Dishes
Sshhhh! This new exhibit is a secret!
These parabolic Whisper Dishes will sit opposite each other on the plaza outside the museum’s main entrance, approximately 36 feet apart. Parabola-shaped dishes collect, focus and amplify sound waves. When visitors speak into the dishes, sound waves bounce off the parabolic shape and travel in parallel to the opposite dish. The sound waves reflect to its focal point—where the sound waves converge. If both visitors are at the focal points, they will hear each other loudly and clearly, even if they whisper!
