Students, referred to as Future Professionals, at Paul Mitchell The School do a ton of hard work: they learn about hair, skin, and nails, and practice techniques to help clients look their best. On top of all of this, they also raise thousands of dollars for local and national charities each year. This year, the students at Paul Mitchell the School Reno have chosen The Discovery as it’s local benefactor for the funds raised through several efforts, the largest being a hair and makeup show called “The Science Behind Hair.” The show was held on April 20th at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino.
The philanthropic side of Paul Mitchell may not be as well-known as the styling side, but it’s a major part of the students’ lives nonetheless. As a national organization, Paul Mitchell rallies its schools during their annual three-month “FUNdraising” campaign to raise money for national nonprofits, while each school chooses a local organization to support. Since 2004, Paul Mitchell has raised over 18 million dollars to support national and local non-profit organizations.
Students at Paul Mitchell the School Reno are excited to support The Discovery’s mission to inspire by being the place to experience science. People may not realize just how much stylists integrate science into their work every day. Science plays an important role in helping people look their best!
This year’s show contained seven different collections, each inspired by a branch or topic of science. Examples include plants, animals, material science, geology, and space. Each dramatic collection was showcased using local volunteer models who also donated their time and talent to this unique FUNdraiser. The show also included performances by local belly dancers and music by Sarah Joyner, who also produced all of the music for this year’s show. Paul Mitchell the School also collected donations from local businesses and held a silent auction.
This year Meghan Schiedel represented The Discovery as a guest to the show. She shared how impressed she was with the students work and the overall production of the show.
“The caliber of the show this year blew me away! Everything from the hair to the music which was composed by a past alumni were so well put together. Using science as their theme was fun and I was inspired by how creative the teams were. My favorite collection was the “Natural Phenomena.” The team was clearly inspired by powerful weather and natural forces. One model even wore an impressively large hairpiece inspired by a volcano!”
The hair show was the most extravagant of the fundraisers they hosted, but the most heartfelt endeavor would have to go to the Daddy-Daughter Hairstyling Class on Saturday, February 10th. They worked with the community organization Reno Dads to spread the word about the event to local families. They originally planned to host a single class at 10 a.m. that Saturday, but received such overwhelming interest in the class that a second session was held at 1 p.m. that same day! Over 60 families attended with sections to teach fathers how to style their daughters’ hair in a simple ponytail, a three-strand braid, and a sock bun!
The local school’s owner taught the class and demonstrated the simple hairstyles on his daughter. At the end of each class, they had an adorable little fashion show where daughters walked the runway, proudly displaying thenew hairstyles that their fathers created for them.
This one day, two-part event allowed Paul Mitchell students to connect with our community and provide a significant service to local families while participating in the FUNdraising campaign. The positive feedback has been immense. The staff and Future Professionals said, “ It was such an amazingly sweet and rewarding event, and we are already super excited for the next one! The relationships we were able to form with our community as a result of it are priceless.”
The Discovery thanks Paul Mitchell The School Reno, for their dedication, and donation of over $650!
