Sorry, we're closed today. There’s always more to discover!
The Discovery has always focused on blending science and fun for Northern Nevada and beyond, aiming to inspire by being the place to experience science. With that in mind, our 2022 Chemistry of the Cocktail fundraising event focused on asking our valued guests to make contributions towards our outreach program to allow us to teach science outside of our 4 walls. This year, that plan was actualized with our brand-new outreach van, paired with a new outreach educator: Jacquie Adame!
Jacquie joined the team at The Discovery in June 2023 working our summer camp program, teaching fun hands-on STEM activities and experiments for campers. After enjoying her time at the museum as much as she did, Jacquie decided to apply to a full-time Outreach Educator position in September 2023. Visiting different schools all around the northern Nevada, Jacquie teaches different interactive science labs that show students how fun science can be. Her favorite part of the workday is seeing how native Spanish-speaking kids’ faces light up when they hear her speaking Spanish, as well as hearing students excitedly say, “I love science now!” Jacquie feels it is important that the Spanish-speaking community, especially children, feel represented and can see themselves in science, specifically at their local museum.
“I want to show them that their native language is an asset and not a barrier or something to be ashamed of!”
Jacquie grew up in a small town in New Mexico and, before beginning her career at The Discovery, was a teacher’s assistant with the Washoe County School District in a special education classroom where she had the amazing privilege of working with students with autism.
As she continues her journey with The Discovery, Jacquie looks forward to seeing continued growth in our outreach program. She hopes to eventually visit all the local schools in Reno, followed by extending outreach to the rural areas in Nevada and northeastern California to show off different science labs, assemblies, and even our new inflatable planetarium! Jacquie would like to continue to see different exhibitions coming to The Discovery as often as possible for all members of the family to enjoy! If you see Jacquie around the museum or out in the comminity, don’t be afraid to say hello. Who knows, she may even visit your child’s classroom sometime soon!
