Closed: Christmas Day There’s always more to discover!
Growing up in Las Vegas, Levi Rojas loved the excitement of visiting the local DISCOVERY Children’s Museum. His favorite part was playing pretend in the store. Shopping for produce, playing cashier, and organizing the shelves to look their best were just some of the activities he enjoyed. This imaginative and creative environment helped spark a life-long curiosity for science and learning—one that has carried into his career and life.
Fast-forward to today, and Levi is a proud member of the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery) in Reno. As a new employee at The Discovery, he has already contributed significantly to the friendly atmosphere and educational environment that the museum provides to the community.
Working as a Visitor Services Representative, Levi spends his days greeting visitors and families, educating them about the hands-on exhibits and activities available to them, solving problems with a customer service ethic, and providing helpful information whenever questions arise. One of his favorite parts of the job includes helping family members choose gifts from the museum store. As Levi explains, “People are very intuitive; they know if you’re being authentic. Everyone here is happy to come to work and encourages each other to grow.”
These types of personalized moments, where visitors have the opportunity to interact with staff, provide an enriching experience that goes beyond basic customer service. The staff truly enjoy engaging and connecting with visitors from all backgrounds.
Prior to working at The Discovery, Levi graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) with a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies with a focus in Critical Gender and Race. His future plans include attending graduate school to become a librarian. In pursuit of this career path, Levi has chosen jobs that align with his literary future. To him, The Discovery has been the perfect fit. It blends education, creativity, and hands-on experiences that helps enrich the lives of others. Similar to a library, The Discovery comes alive with stories each day. Levi enjoys being part of this impactful experience – one that can help shape young minds and encourage personal growth in adults of all ages.
From pointing to live science demonstrations or upcoming special events, such as The Discovery’s “Trick-or-Treat” or $5 Admission after 4:00pm Wednesdays, Levi gets to inform visitors about all of the exciting activities at the museum. One of his favorite parts of his job is the fact that there’s something for everyone in the community to enjoy, no matter their background or financial status.
“Museums and libraries are sort the last great equalizers for society… a place where it shouldn’t matter who you are, where you come from, what you look like, what you believe; you’re just as special as everyone else in that museum.”
The Discovery supports this principle by providing a Financial Assistance Program to children, families, groups, and schools that cannot afford the full cost of admission to the museum and its programs. Making educational opportunities accessible to everyone regardless of their socioeconomic status is an important part of The Discovery’s mission.
When it comes to learning and development, The Discovery provides an enriching experience for people of all ages. Just as they encourage their staff to grow and learn, The Discovery supports the unique talents of the community. From volunteers, to educators, and the families who visit, everyone here is important. Everyone matters. “In a society that’s built on inequality, we serve a very healing function in this community,” Levi says. His passion for promoting equality and providing opportunities for underprivileged families shines through in his work.
As Levi plans his future career as a librarian, he has been writing the best story of all—one of community and acceptance. The Discovery is a place where everyone belongs, and that is something worth sharing for generations to come.
