The Discovery is proud to employ some of the kindest individuals around, and Visitor Services Representative (VSR) Sandy Madura is no exception. A five-year veteran at the museum, Sandy always comes to work with a smile on her face and a heartfelt “hello” for everyone she comes across.
A longtime member of the Reno community, Sandy attended Mt. Rose Elementary School, the original Billinghurst Junior High School, Reno High School, and the University of Nevada, Reno. Before working at The Discovery, Sandy spent her days teaching elementary school students. After retiring from teaching, she came to work for the museum part-time so she could continue to learn, and remain in close contact with the children of the community and their families. Sandy’s main job is working in the Museum Store where she helps maintain the stock and displays, as well as helping museum visitors pick out the perfect gift after spending their day learning about science.
“I enjoy demonstrating our new items for customers who aren’t sure what to purchase.”
As for the future of The Discovery, Sandy shares the same outlook that so many of our talented staff members have in that she hopes to see the museum continue its outreach into our community to inspire learning and imaginative inquiry to better our world. Next time you see Sandy in the Museum Store, don’t hesitate to say hello! She would be more than happy to help you choose the perfect item to commemorate your visit.
