Science Distilled, a new lecture series created by DRI and The Discovery, makes cutting-edge science approachable through presentations on current and curious topics held at hip locations in a social atmosphere.
Genetically Speaking
Scientists and health researchers are discovering that one size does not fit all when it comes to advice for promoting heart health. Why is it so hard to predict who is going to have a heart attack? Why do seemingly healthy people die of heart attacks? Sometimes a good diet and a healthy lifestyle are not enough. Emerging research is pointing to the central role that our genetics play in assessing risk and improving diagnoses for cardiac-related issues.
This Science Distilled panel brings together some of our community’s leading experts in heart health and genetics, spanning the continuum from research and discovery to clinical practice and health education.
We’ll discuss discoveries from around the globe and right here in our backyard. Come hear these experts talk about the big questions in heart health and how they are solving these mysteries to improve patient care, prevention, and education.
Time: Doors open at 7:00pm, presentation begins at 7:30pm
Location: Patagonia Outlet, 130 S. Center Street, Reno
Joe Grzymski, PhD
Joe will facilitate this exciting panel. He is the co-director of the Institute for Health Innovation, which leads the Healthy Nevada Project. This collaboration between DRI and Renown Health is one of the first community-based population health studies in the US. A world-class team of researchers and physicians are using genetics, environmental data and individual health information to create a healthier Nevada.
Chris Rowan, MD
Dr. Rowan is a cardiologist with Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health. His specialties include clinical cardiology, preventive cardiology, cardiovascular imaging and advanced heart failure. Dr. Rowan’s work extends beyond the exam room to research using modern imaging to scan ancient mummies for evidence of heart disease. His research recently took him to the Amazon to support research with communities of indigenous people, who have some of the healthiest hearts in the world.
Lisa Calvo, MD
Dr. Calvo is a specialist in internal medicine at the UNR School of Medicine. She plays a central role in training future physicians there, which involves teaching the process of applying medical knowledge to each individual patient. This is both an art and a science, as applying science to real people requires nuance and skilled clinical reasoning. Dr. Calvo attended medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans and completed her residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Lynice Anderson
Lynice is the Director of Intensive Cardiac Rehab at Renown Health. The ICR program focuses on plant-based nutrition exercise and stress management as they relate to improved heart health and quality of life. As a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator for over 20 years, she continues to witness the positive impact of patient education and the power of lifestyle medicine for both prevention and treatment of chronic conditions.
