The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery) was recently selected to join the 7th Cohort of the Cultural Competence Learning Institute (CCLI), a national effort designed to help museums focus on 21st Century skills that are relevant to advancing their cultural competency. The Discovery was select from a field of more than 20 applicants, based on the organization’s current efforts and best practices as a culturally inclusive organization.
Members of The Discovery’s staff including Mat Sinclair, President/CEO traveled to Washington, D.C. for an intensive three-day kickoff to the year-long effort. In addition to The Discovery, other museums in the 7th Cohort include The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, International Museum of Art and Science, Living History Farms and Science Museum of Virginia.
“I believe this is the most important work a science museum should be engaged in,” said Sarah Gobbs-Hill, Senior VP of Learning & Advancement for The Discovery. “It is an honor to learn from other leaders in the field as we continue to work together with our community here in Nevada.”
CCLI is a year-long institute that helps participating museums activate their efforts around diversity and inclusion. CCLI builds capacity for institutions to maximize the benefits of diversity within their workforce and improve the services offered to people from different cultural backgrounds.
A partnership between ASTC, Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, the Association of Children’s Museums, and the Garibay Group, and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, CCLI was developed with and serves museums of all types and sizes.
The Cultural Competence Learning Institute, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), builds from the 2009 IMLS report Museums, Libraries and 21st Century Skills.
